Gum & Smile Contouring

Gum Surgery

Crown lengthening is a surgical procedure that removes excess gum tissue — and sometimes a small amount of underlying bone — to expose more of a tooth’s visible surface. It’s most commonly used to improve the balance of gum to tooth where there’s a disproportionate amount of gum on show, often described as a “gummy smile”.

Often part of a wider plan

Crown lengthening is frequently combined with cosmetic or restorative dentistry — bonding, veneers or crowns — to achieve the final result. We’ll always explain how it fits into your overall treatment before we begin.

What does the procedure involve?

  1. Soft tissue removal (gingivectomy)

In some cases we remove gum tissue only. This is a relatively simple procedure carried out under local anaesthetic. The soft tissue is removed as carefully as possible using fine surgical instruments or a laser, exposing the tooth beneath. The treated area heals quickly, with minimal discomfort afterwards.

  2. Soft and hard tissue removal

Sometimes, as well as reshaping the gum line, we need to adjust the bone level beneath the gum to ensure a healthy, stable long-term result and recreate the correct natural anatomy. Under local anaesthetic, small incisions are made to reshape the gum margin, a little tissue is gently lifted, and the underlying bone is recontoured. The gum is then repositioned and secured with fine stitches.

  3. How will I feel afterwards?

Recovery is usually quick, with most patients back to normal daily activities the very next day. Your gums may feel a little tender or swollen for a day or two, but most people experience little to no discomfort. Full healing typically takes a few weeks, after which the final crown or restoration can be fitted.

Whether the goal is aesthetic or restorative, my aim is always a natural, balanced result achieved as gently as possible.
